After becoming a certified peer counselor in 2024 through NWCM, I realized many clients needed more than hair services—they needed guidance, encouragement, and practical tools to achieve their goals. Drawing from my own experiences in business, financial challenges, and career transitions, I offer one-on-one support to aspiring beauty professionals, small business owners, and individuals seeking financial independence.
Through my Beauty and the Business series, I teach financial literacy, entrepreneurship, and professional development. My mentorship-based approach focuses on goal setting, active listening, and resource connection to empower clients to take charge of their journeys. I maintain professional boundaries and connect clients to additional community resources when needed.
Beyond my work, I’m deeply committed to community service, regularly participating in food and blood drives. My salon, located at 7629 Rainier Ave S, Seattle, WA 98118, serves as a welcoming space for both beauty and community connection.
As a wife and mother of three, I understand the balance of career and family, bringing resilience and purpose into everything I do. My goal is to uplift, inspire, and help others turn their dreams into reality.

Benjamin Jameel Shabazz
Barber Shop Owner
Hi, my name is Benjamin Jameel Shabazz, and I am a peer counselor based in King County. I became a peer counselor in 2024 through the Northwest Credible Messengers program. As a community organizer, I’ve always been passionate about mentoring youth and building relationships through community engagement.
For over 20 years, I have owned a barbershop, where I provided peer support to clients even before understanding the formal concept of peer support. Growing up in the same area I now work in, coupled with my lived experiences of poverty, addiction, abuse, and PTSD, has given me a broad perspective on what it means to be a peer supporter.
I realize that peer support is needed in a variety of ways, whether it’s being an ear for listening or helping build confidence to accomplish set goals. My life experience, along with my training, has provided me with a diverse approach to peer support. Currently, I offer mentorship to young BIPOC males aged 14-21 in areas such as financial literacy, entrepreneurship, and overall well-being. I provide one-on-one support to peers of all ages and genders, leveraging the resources offered to me through Northwest Credible Messengers and the extensive network of resources I’ve cultivated over the years as a community relations advisor.
I strive to create a comfortable environment where every voice is heard, and growth is fostered in all aspects of life. Beyond peer counseling, I continuously work on myself mentally, physically, and spiritually by going to the gym, attending community events promoting community building and Black excellence, and fulfilling my duties as a leader in my religious community. I believe that the best way to serve others is by being the best version of yourself.
My goal is to (H.O.P.E.) Help Our Peers Excel through recognizing and harnessing their potential. It would be my honor to walk alongside you on your journey to excellence.
Peace and blessings!

My work is dedicated to supporting individuals at high risk of violence, victims of violence, and parents, helping them navigate healing, mentorship, and community resources. I focus on fostering positive behavioral changes, resilience, and self-advocacy to create lasting impact within the community. I hold certifications in Peer Support Counseling, Healing Center Engagement, Nonviolent De-escalation, Harm Reduction, and Mental Health First Aid. I have also completed CPI training, equipping me with the skills to provide trauma-informed, compassionate support.
My approach is rooted in harm reduction and healing-centered engagement, always striving to empower those I work with. These experiences drive me to be part of the solution, working to break cycles of harm and create a safe, healing environment. If I can help even one person change their path, I know the work is worth it. I offer one-on-one peer support sessions, healing circles, mentorship for at-risk youth and families, violence prevention and intervention support, and resource navigation.
I am available 24/7 by phone or email, and while I prefer in-person meetings, I am also open to virtual sessions to accommodate different needs. Outside of my work, I am passionate about car building and motorcycle riding. I find joy in craftsmanship and the freedom of the open road, balancing my love for helping others with my passion for hands-on creativity.

Co-founder of Community Conversations
Hello,
As a Certified Peer Counselor with a deep commitment to mentorship, violence intervention, housing advocacy, and youth empowerment, I bring both professional expertise and lived experience to my work. I received my Peer Counselor certification from NWCM in January 2025 and have been a licensed barber for ten years, which has given me a unique opportunity to connect with individuals from diverse backgrounds. My passion for peer counseling is rooted in my own journey, shaped by the challenges of witnessing my mother’s struggles with addiction, my father’s incarceration, and my own survival after being violently stabbed at the age of thirteen. Despite my grandmother’s efforts to steer me in a different direction, I was drawn into gang and street life at an early age. However, through resilience and recovery, I have transformed my past into a tool for supporting and uplifting others.
My approach to peer counseling is centered on providing valuable support through shared experiences, using active listening, open-ended questioning, a non-judgmental attitude, and personal storytelling to foster connection. I maintain professional boundaries by clearly defining my role, ensuring confidentiality, and respecting the autonomy of my peers. Whether through one-on-one or group sessions, I strive to create safe and meaningful spaces for healing and empowerment. I offer both in-person and virtual sessions, with availability Monday through Friday from 9 AM to 6 PM and weekend appointments upon request. English is my primary language, and I am committed to making my services as accessible and impactful as possible. Beyond peer counseling, I am also the co-founder of Community Conversations, a series focused on mental well-being, empowerment, and uplifting minoritized communities. Additionally, I have completed Healing Centered Engagement training, further reinforcing my commitment to trauma-informed, strength-based approaches. My ultimate goal is to help individuals in my community lead full, healthy, and productive lives, providing them with the tools and support they need to navigate life’s challenges and embrace their potential. Through my work, I hope to inspire hope, foster resilience, and build transformational connections that drive lasting positive change.

I know what it feels like to be unseen and unheard, and I strive to create a safe space where people can be acknowledged, valued, and empowered.
My philosophy is rooted in lived experience, empathy, and holistic healing. I integrate social-emotional support, financial literacy, and self-esteem building into my work, understanding that true recovery extends beyond emotional healing—it’s about empowerment and stability. Certified Peer Counselor
Kenya Bostic
Licensed Cosmetologist, Administrative Business Partner
Hello,
In 2025, I earned my Peer certification through the Washington State Health Care Authority via the NWCM Program. My passion for advocacy started in underserved communities, my support has driven me to assist victims of violence, previously incarcerated individuals, and those experiencing grief and loss. I aim to provide guidance in resource navigation of healthcare and social service systems, and employment training.
However, it was my personal struggles that gave me a profound understanding of the emotional and mental struggles many individuals face. Having navigated thru PTSD, domestic violence, homicide-related trauma, and mental health challenges such as depression, anxiety, and anger—along with the weight of misconceptions and judgment from my own community—I deeply understood the pain of feeling lost, angry, and self-hatred. What helped me was having someone believe in me when I couldn’t believe in myself. That kind of understanding and guidance was rare, but when I found it, it changed everything. It changed ME! I’d like to become that someone for others.
My journey has shaped my approach to Peer counseling, my goal is to reinforce the importance of support, patience, and empowerment. Emphasizing relationships, aspirations, and goal setting. Assisting Peers build and sustain healthy connections while guiding them toward future possibilities. By identifying their strengths, assets, and purpose, Peers are able to create meaning in their journey, reinforcing resilience and self-empowerment.
Along my journey, I have established myself as a Licensed Cosmetologist, Administrative Business Partner, and now, your Peer Counselor. With this outgoing personality, you may have seen me on stage hosting shows or publicly supporting individuals in crisis or public wins. No matter what I do, my goal remains the same—to stay authentic, empathetic, and supportive while making a positive impact on those I serve.
My availability is based on the needs of my peers. I am able to provide both one-on-one peer sessions (in person or virtually) and pre-arranged group sessions in collaboration with other HCE Certified Peer counselors and peers. I can be reached Monday through Thursday from 10 AM to 6 PM. Fridays by request.

Michelle Echols
Washington State Behavioral Health Peer Support Program
Hello,
My name is Michelle Echols. I am a certified peer counselor based in Seattle Washington. I became a peer counselor in 2025 through the Washington State Behavioral Health Peer Support Program. I was doing the work of a peer counselor long before I knew there was a name for it. Many years ago, as young wife and mother I was dealing with the challenges of family life. I experienced seasons of depression, grief, loss and insecurity. My Pastor who knew my story, noticed how I was able to navigate through these challenges, and recommended that I work with other women in my church community to be a source of encouragement to these women who were going through some of the same challenges that I had overcome. I believe that each person has the ability to draw strength and resilience from their own lived experiences. I also believe that we can gain a sense of hope and inspiration by partnering with others who have walked the same path. I specialize in empowering women and families to navigate through personal challenges, by helping them develop strategies that foster healthy relationships. I encourage open dialogue with confidentiality and no judgment. I offer one on one as well as group sessions. I am available in person and virtually. I maintain clear professional boundaries by letting my clients know what they can expect from me as a peer support specialist. I also let them know that it is a safe space and a place of mutual respect.
Outside of work, I am active in my church community. I love music and I enjoy singing and leading worship. I love facilitating at womens conferences and bible study groups.
Thankfully, I was not alone in my journey. I had others who walked alongside of me in my most challenging moments. This is what has motivated me to do the same for others. As a peer counselor, I feel that I am walking in my God given purpose.

Monika Christine Mathews

I’m also the Founder/CEO of Life Enrichment Group, an organization that provides academic mentorship and leadership development for Black youth, and the owner of QueenCare Products, a natural body care company focusing on health and wellness.
I have personal experience with homelessness, toxic relationships, PTSD, and trauma, which deeply informs my approach to counseling. I specialize in working with Black youth, particularly those dealing with behavioral issues that impact their academics, and I provide culturally relevant support for families.
My counseling philosophy is centered on the belief that everyone has a purpose, but it often gets hidden beneath life’s challenges. As a peer counselor, I’m here to help my clients peel back those layers, uncover their true selves, and heal. I use open-ended questions and encourage my clients to take full responsibility for their journey while empowering them to do the work. My goal is to be a positive support, even if it’s just being a listening ear.
I believe in setting clear boundaries to ensure that my work is both compassionate and professional. I create a safe, supportive environment where clients can grow, while also respecting their personal space and autonomy.
I offer flexible availability, primarily through virtual sessions for adults, and both virtual and in-person sessions for youth. I provide both one-on-one and group sessions, and I’m always looking to expand my knowledge through additional training.
What drives me is the hope that my story can inspire others. I want to show my clients that success isn’t for just a select few; it’s for anyone willing to rise above their circumstances and put in the effort. Success, for me, is about personal growth and overcoming obstacles—and that’s what I help my clients achieve. If you’re interested in working with me, feel free to reach out via email.

Certified Peer Counselor
Tony Brooks
Owner of T. Brooks Quality Cuts
Hello,
I’m Tony Brooks, a Certified Peer Counselor based in Seattle, WA. I run my own barbershop, T. Brooks Quality Cuts, and alongside cutting hair, I use my space as a hub for community support and resource navigation. I received my Peer Counseling Certification from Northwest Credible Messenger in October 2024, and I’ve been using it to help connect people with the tools they need to improve their lives. I know firsthand that life isn’t always easy.
Growing up in South Seattle, I faced my share of challenges—incarceration at a young age, housing instability, and the struggle of self-acceptance. I’ve been counted out, stereotyped, and had to fight to build a better life for myself. Through all of that, I never gave up. I found faith, purpose, and a passion for helping others, especially those who feel like they’ve been forgotten. I believe real change starts in the community, and barbershops have always been a safe space for conversation and trust-building. That’s why I use my platform to provide peer support, utility assistance, life coaching connections, and parenting resources. Whether someone is dealing with substance use, depression, dual diagnosis, or just trying to get back on their feet, I do my best to offer guidance and connect them to the right help. I keep it real and meet people where they are.
My approach is centered around healing, empowerment, and accountability. I know what it’s like to feel stuck, but I also know that with the right mindset and support, anyone can turn their life around. I focus on goal-setting, coping strategies, financial awareness, and personal development—whatever it takes to help someone find their way. I believe in leading with empathy and action because talk is cheap if there’s no follow-through. Every person has value and potential, and I want to help them see that in themselves. I don’t judge. I listen. And when needed, I help steer people in the right direction.
I offer one-on-one peer support sessions (in person or virtual) from Tuesday to Saturday, 10 AM – 4 PM. I also participate in community events with Northwest Credible Messenger whenever possible. If you’re looking for someone to talk to, navigate resources, or just help you figure out your next steps, I’m here.

For over 24 years, I’ve worked as a barber, developing deep connections within my community and offering not just haircuts, but a space for meaningful conversations, reflection, and encouragement. Through these relationships, I’ve seen firsthand how the simple act of listening can create a significant impact. In addition to my work as a barber, I specialize in supporting individuals from all walks of life, including at-risk youth, seniors, people in crisis, and individuals in need of mentorship, employment, and housing resources. My personal experiences with trauma, homelessness, and resilience allow me to connect with others on a deep and real level. Having faced these struggles myself, I understand what it feels like to be unseen, unheard, and uncertain about the future, but I also know the power of overcoming those challenges.
In my practice, I prioritize active listening, encouragement, and accountability. I meet people where they are, offering the guidance and support they need in the moment—whether that’s simply being a sounding board or offering tangible resources. I’m committed to creating a safe, nonjudgmental space where individuals feel heard and empowered to pursue their goals. Beyond my work as a barber, I offer one-on-one and group support, both in-person and virtually, ensuring I maintain clear professional boundaries while fostering an environment where people can grow, heal, and thrive.
I believe that transformation begins with hope, faith, and recognizing the strength within each person. My approach is grounded in empathy and understanding, informed by my own journey. I strive to help others see their potential, encouraging them to not only overcome adversity but to flourish in spite of it. Whether I’m supporting someone through a difficult time, helping them with behavioral challenges, or guiding them in finding resources to rebuild their lives, my goal is to help individuals tap into their own resilience and strength.
CERTIFIED PEER COUNSELER
Charles Griffin
Hello,
I am Charles Griffin. I was born in South Seattle and went to Rainier Beach High School and
graduated from Seattle Urban Academy. Before I began my journey in education, I discovered a
passion for food as a manager at Five Guys, a full-time chef and now as an owner and operator of
my own business serving my community.
It was through food that I learned my real passion was serving people. However, I always knew that
my calling was to serve the youth of my community. While I still serve my community through the
love of food, to follow my calling I began work as an engagement specialist at The Boys and Girls
Club and now have the privilege of working as a consultant with Shine Kinesthetics. I continue my
journey with our youth teaching them self-advocacy, leadership, and social emotional awareness by
giving them a safe space that I struggled to find as a youth. My dream is to plant seeds in every
student to grow them into passionate community leaders.
I was trained by Northwest Credible Messenger in the Healthcare Authority’s Certified Peer
Counselor Certification. Whether it’s one-on-one peer support, group healing circles, or simply
providing a space where someone feels safe to talk, I believe that having the right support can
change everything. I offer both in-person and virtual support, and I make myself available 24 / 7 –
because I know that life doesn’t wait for business hours. I got into this work because I’ve seen too
many people struggle without the help they need. I’ve lost friends. I’ve seen young people,
especially those who look like me, get left behind. My goal is to change that. I want to see people
grow, to see them realize their own potential, and to inspire them to turn around and help the next
person in need.
If you need support, guidance, or just someone who will listen without judgment, you can reach me
at charlesgriff206@gmail.com or (206) 859-0070. I’m here for you.
